La presenza di sorgenti termali e il ritrovamento di sontuose ville inducono a ritenere che Oplonti, in epoca romana, fosse una località di soggiorno per ricchi proprietari. Segnalata da un’antica mappa delle vie dell’Impero Romano, Oplontis faceva parte del suburbio di Pompei. Il sito archeologico è costituito da due edifici monumentali: la cosiddetta Villa di Poppea (Patrimonio dell’Umanità) e la Villa di Lucius Crassius Tertius configurato come un Horreum ovvero un edificio utilizzato come abitazione privata e sede di attività commerciali.
La Villa di Poppea risale alla metà del I secolo a.C. ed è considerata la più vasta villa suburbana di epoca romana finora conosciute. L’edificio è un tipico esempio di villa d’otium ed è famosa in particolare per gli splendidi esempi di pittura parietale ed è l’unica tra le ville vesuviane che permette di ricostruire la composizione dei giardini interni, dei luoghi di riposo e meditazione che rivestivano un ruolo di grande importanza nella vita dell’aristocrazia romana.

The presence of thermal springs and the discovery of sumptuous villas lead us to believe that in Roman times Oplonti was a resort for wealthy owners. Reported by an ancient map of the roads of the Roman Empire, Oplontis was part of the suburb area of Pompeii. The main archaeological finds consist of two monument: the so-called Villa di Poppea (included in the list of World Heritage) and the Villa of Lucius Crassius Tertius which was an Horreum, a building used as a private home but at the same time home to business commercial and productive.
Villa di Poppea is the only ones that can be visited today. It dates back to the mid-1st century BC and is considered the largest suburban villa from Roman times known so far. Built on a tall cliff overlooking the sea, the structure represents a classic example of a villa d’otium and it is famous in particular for the rich and splendid examples of wall painting that reveal the high technical level achieved by the painting of the time. It is also the only one of all the Vesuvian villas that allows us to reconstruct the composition of the internal gardens, places of rest and meditation that played a role of great importance in the life of the Roman aristocracy.
